Privacy Policy
Last updated: February 23, 2026
Your privacy matters. Quit It stores all data locally on your device. We don't collect personal data, we don't use cookies, and we don't track you. Your quit journey is nobody's business but yours.
1. Who We Are
Quit It is a free mobile wellness app designed to help people quit smoking and drinking. The app is developed by Octopye Designs.
For the purposes of UK data protection law, the data controller is Octopye Designs. However, because all personal data is stored locally on your device and never transmitted to us, our role as data controller is limited to the delivery and maintenance of the app itself.
2. Data We Collect
2.1 Data stored locally on your device
The following data is created and stored entirely on your device. We never receive, access, or transmit this data:
- Quit journey data: Your quit date, streak information, and habit type (smoking, drinking, or both)
- Daily check-ins: Mood and craving level responses you submit each day
- Journal entries: Personal reflections and notes you write
- Progress data: Achievement badges earned, game scores, challenge completions, and breathing exercise usage
- Savings data: The daily cost amount you enter during onboarding, used to calculate savings in GBP
- Settings and preferences: Your name, font size, high-contrast mode, text-to-speech language and speed preferences
2.2 Data we do NOT collect
We want to be clear about what we do not do:
- We do not collect your email address, phone number, or any account information
- We do not collect your location or IP address
- We do not use analytics, tracking pixels, or behavioural tracking
- We do not collect device identifiers or advertising IDs
- We do not collect health data beyond what you voluntarily enter into the app
- We do not require you to create an account
3. How We Use Your Data
All data processing happens locally on your device. The app uses your locally stored data to:
- Track your quit journey progress and maintain your streak counter
- Calculate health benefits based on time since your quit date
- Calculate financial savings based on your entered daily cost
- Provide personalised encouragement and buddy companion interactions
- Award achievement badges when you reach milestones
- Generate daily challenges appropriate to your journey stage
- Display your check-in history and journal entries
- Apply your accessibility preferences (font size, contrast, text-to-speech)
4. Lawful Basis for Processing (UK GDPR)
Under Article 6 of the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR), we rely on the following lawful bases:
- Consent (Article 6(1)(a)): You choose to enter data into the app voluntarily. You can stop using any feature or delete your data at any time.
- Legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)): The app processes data locally on your device to deliver the functionality you expect — such as streak tracking, savings calculations, and personalised buddy messages. This processing is minimal, proportionate, and does not override your rights or freedoms, particularly as the data never leaves your device.
4.1 Special category data
Some data you enter (such as smoking/drinking habits, mood levels, and craving intensity) may be considered health-related data under Article 9 of the UK GDPR. This data is:
- Entered voluntarily by you
- Processed with your explicit consent
- Stored only on your device
- Never transmitted to us or any third party
5. Data Storage and Security
All personal data is stored locally on your device using AsyncStorage (React Native's on-device storage). This means:
- Your data is protected by your device's own security (passcode, biometrics, encryption)
- No data is transmitted over the internet to our servers
- No data is stored in cloud services or remote databases
- If you lose your device, the data is only accessible if someone can unlock your device
We do not operate servers that store user data. The app's backend server is used solely to serve the landing page and this privacy policy.
6. Data Sharing and Third Parties
We do not sell, trade, rent, or share your personal data with any third party.
6.1 Third-party services used by the app
- Expo (expo.dev): The app is delivered through Expo's platform. Expo may collect basic technical data (device type, OS version) for app delivery purposes. See Expo's Privacy Policy.
- Device APIs: The app may request access to device features such as haptic feedback and text-to-speech. These are processed on-device and no data is sent externally.
6.2 NHS resources
Quit It includes links to publicly available NHS resources (such as the NHS Better Health website, Smokefree helpline, and Drinkline). When you tap these links, you leave the Quit It app and are subject to the NHS's own privacy policy. We do not share any of your app data with the NHS.
7. Cookies and Tracking
7.1 Mobile app
The Quit It mobile app does not use cookies. It does not use tracking pixels, analytics scripts, advertising SDKs, or any form of cross-app or cross-site tracking.
7.2 Website (quitit.octopye.com)
Our website does not use cookies. Specifically:
- No first-party cookies
- No third-party cookies
- No analytics cookies (we do not use Google Analytics or similar)
- No advertising or marketing cookies
- No session cookies (there are no user accounts or login sessions)
- No cookie consent banner is needed because no cookies are set
7.3 Local storage
The mobile app uses on-device storage (AsyncStorage) to save your preferences and progress data. This is not the same as browser cookies — it is app-internal storage that is never accessible to websites or other apps.
8. Your Rights Under UK GDPR
Under the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018, you have the following rights:
- Right of access (Article 15): You can view all data stored by the app at any time through the app's screens (journal, check-in history, settings, progress).
- Right to rectification (Article 16): You can edit your name and preferences in Settings at any time.
- Right to erasure (Article 17): You can delete all data by using "Reset App Data" in Settings, or by uninstalling the app. See our Delete Data page for full instructions.
- Right to restrict processing (Article 18): You can stop using any feature of the app at any time. No background processing occurs.
- Right to data portability (Article 20): As all data is stored on your device, you retain full control over it at all times.
- Right to object (Article 21): You can stop using the app at any time. No data processing continues after you close the app.
- Right to lodge a complaint: If you believe your data protection rights have been breached, you have the right to lodge a complaint with the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). Visit ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or call 0303 123 1113.
9. Data Retention and Deletion
Your data is retained on your device for as long as the app is installed and you choose to keep it. We do not retain any copy of your data on our servers because we never receive it.
To delete your data:
- From within the app: Go to Settings and tap "Reset App Data" to delete all locally stored data
- By uninstalling: Removing the app from your device deletes all associated local data
For full instructions, visit our Delete Data page.
10. Children's Privacy
Quit It is not intended for use by anyone under the age of 16. We do not knowingly collect or process data from anyone under 16. Since the app does not require account creation and all data is stored locally, we have no way to verify user age. If you are a parent or guardian and believe a child under 16 is using this app, you can delete all data by uninstalling the app from their device.
11. International Data Transfers
Quit It does not transfer your personal data internationally. All personal data stays on your device and is never transmitted to any server, whether in the UK or elsewhere.
The Expo platform (used for app delivery) is operated by Expo, Inc., based in the United States. Any technical data collected by Expo for app delivery purposes may be processed in the US. See Expo's Privacy Policy for details.
12. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected on this page with an updated "Last updated" date. We encourage you to review this policy periodically. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
